# Before Servers Go In - Deploy Perimeter Security Assets At Data Centers
Posted on: Apr 23, 2025 7:58:50 AM by: Carson Schenk
The need for safe and secure data storage has risen dramatically in the past decade and the number of new data centers being constructed are at an all time high. In a previous article, we discussed [the need for perimeter security in the initial construction stages of these data centers](https://blog.arxperimeters.com/data-centers-are-growing-are-they-thinking-about-perimeter-security).
New construction of data centers are high value targets for theft, vandalism, and cyber attacks. Before you install the servers, architects, engineers, contractors, and other personnel are in need of deploying temporary perimeter security assets to protect these new construction sites.
## How often does theft happen at construction sites?
According to [a recent report](https://www.contimod.com/construction-site-theft-statistics/#:~:text=There%20are%20over%2011%2C000%20incidents%20of%20construction%20equipment%20theft%20each%20year.&text=Estimate%20%24300%20million%20to%20%241,of%20about%20%246%2C000%20per%20incident.), there are over 11,000 incidents of theft on job sites in the United States with an estimated cost of 300 million to 1 billion dollars in lost equipment. These thieves access sites that are unprotected or improperly protected with makeshift or left than adequate perimeter security solutions.
## How many data centers are being built in 2025?
This year marks the highest number of data centers being constructed in the US. [With roughly 4,750 data centers planned to break ground in 2025](https://sherwood.news/tech/a-record-number-of-data-centers-are-in-the-works-for-next-year/), there will be a large amount of potential theft for thieves.
## Vulnerabilities of new construction data centers
Construction sites, whether they are residential, commercial, or data centers are high target areas for theft. Data centers are especially vulnerable given the type of materials and equipment that are onsite.
Each site potentially holds millions of dollars of critical infrastructure equipment like HVAC units, heavy machinery, cabling, generators, switchgear, and communications equipment. All of this equipment can be untraceable if stolen.
These sites also have variable access points that need to be controlled by security personnel. Access points can change as the project progresses and make the need for a mobile access point more prominent.
## How can new construction for data centers prevent theft?
Just like the title of this article, before the servers go in and the initial planning stages are being developed, architects, engineers, and general contractors should deploy [anti scale fencing](https://arxperimeters.com/arx-rentals/high-security-fence-rental/) with controlled access points to create a secure perimeter.
Your typical chain link fence is cheap but is a true vulnerability given the ease of cutting and climbing of these fences. We’ve spoken about the difference between anti scale fencing and chain link fencing in a separate article that outlines the differences.
## Conclusion
Data centers are high value targets and require an extra level of security during and after construction. Before permanent fencing goes in, deploying a temporary surface mounted fencing system is typically required, but which fence system do you truly want to create a secure perimeter.
This is where [ARX High Security Fencing](https://arxperimeters.com/arx-rentals/high-security-fence-rental/) comes into play. The ARX Fence is rapidly deployed, anti-climbing, and has a wind rating of 130 mph. Mounting this fence on any surface with or without anchoring to the ground is an option and our team has designed modular vehicle gates for your access control points.
Deploying [vehicle barrier systems](https://arxperimeters.com/solutions/vehicle-barriers/) and [guard shacks](https://arxperimeters.com/arx-rentals/portable-guard-shack/) at access control points gives your an extra level of protection for your security personnel to control who comes in a who and what goes out.
