Security fencing comes in a lot of different forms and the differences between them can be obvious and not so obvious. When it comes to the different types of security fencing there are two main categories; permanent and temporary. But what is the difference in a high security fence vs a chain link fence?
Depending on the application will determine the factors needed to make the right decision for what security fence you will need to deploy.
The most well known security fence would be the chainlink, given that most people can recognize the design quickly. But how much do you know about high security fences with 3-5-8 wire mesh?
The names speak for themselves and most can figure out the difference in application between the two, so I’ll keep this short and sweet.
Permanent fencing is put into place for long-term use and is generally built with its posts buried, cemented, or bolted into place. Both residential and commercial properties will utilize this type of fencing for protecting their property for unauthorized access.
Temporary fencing is installed for a short time period and will be removed at a designated time and usually surface mounted, meaning they are sitting on the surface of the ground. Typically, this is used by commercial or industrial property owners and special event coordinators for protecting their property from unauthorized access.
High Security Fencing is a physical barrier that is deployed to protect people, property, assets, and even data from unauthorized access. A high security fence is typically designed with strong metal materials like high quality steel and aluminum.
These security fences are installed in a variety of applications and properties including; military bases, law enforcement agencies, political events, government buildings, music festivals, data centers, hotels, schools, airports, and other places that require a high level of security.
The objective of a high security fence is to prevent potential intruders from climbing, breaking, or cutting the fence to gain access to the secured perimeter. This requires an anti-climb design, and this is where proper high security fencing positions itself ahead of chain link options when security is a top priority.
Chain link fence is designed with metal wire that is woven into that well known and easy to recognize diamond pattern. The wires are then connected to a steel or aluminum rounded post that is held together by metal brackets.
These fences have their applications, but considering them for installment for a secure perimeter fence would not be a top priority. As kids, we more than likely have climbed over a handful of chain link fences. They easily allow for grabbing and placing feet within the woven wires making climbing a breeze.
Most anti climb high security fences are designed to not allow an individual to insert their hands or feet into the mesh for easy climbing. Standing at 8 feet high or taller makes jumping over another challenge.
Aside from easily being able to climb a chain link fence, the spacing of the metal wire also introduces another security risk. If a nefarious individual wanted to cut through the fence, cutting a chain link fence vs a typical high security fence with very little spacing between the mesh, would and is far easier.
If the objective is to prevent unauthorized access to a restricted area, considering an anti climb high security fence option will provide a more secure perimeter than the chain link fence. They both have their proper applications, but we’re talking about proper security precautions.
There are a handful of companies that provide anti climb high security fence options and conducting your due diligence is important.
